For a while now, the main character in our campaign has been a toy chicken. So ... you either like our chicken ads or you don’t: there is no middle ground. Whichever camp you are in, the ad is clearly attracting attention. That is a good thing, because too many toys, electrical items and batteries are ending up in blue bags, and that needs to be avoided wherever possible.
We have been a bit too enthusiastic about putting waste out for recycling, and as a result more and more stuff is ending up in the PMD bag that shouldn’t be there. From shoes and toys to textiles and inflatable paddling pools – as well as electronic devices and batteries. And that’s causing some serious problems.
The reason is that sorting machines are specifically designed for packaging. Items that should not be there can jam up the machinery, while lithium batteries in electronics can cause fire hazards and explosions, resulting in unsafe situations for our employees.
That is why we are asking for people to think more carefully about recycling waste: the blue bag is for packaging, not for other stuff.
