Small hazardous waste

Enjoy camping? Dispose of your empty gas cylinders safely!

Summer is here, and that means camping and festivals. Time to fire up the barbecue or light the camping cooker again. But what do you do with the empty gas cartridges, the barbecue lighter fluid bottle or the refillable gas cylinder? Don’t put them in PMD or put them out with residual waste. Follow our summer sorting tips and keep our sorting staff safe.

Disposable camping gas cartridges: Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Single-use gas cartridges are convenient for cooking on a gas stove while camping. They are light and compact but ... also extremely flammable. Even when they appear empty, they can still explode in sorting centres, so they are a major risk to sorting workers. So even if they are empty, never put them in the residual waste or PMD. Take propane and butane gas cartridges to the recycling park and put them in the HHW (household hazardous waste, also called small hazardous waste or small chemical waste).

Incidentally, the same also applies to spray cans that are often used as refills for lighters or refills for camping gas cartridges.

Refillable gas cylinders: to a collection point

If you use a refillable gas cylinder for your gas barbecue, motorhome or caravan, the idea is of course that you reuse it. Don’t take it to the recycling centre or to a scrap yard: make sure it gets back to the supplier.

How to return a gas bottle

You can return or exchange bottles from well-known brands such as Campingaz, Antargaz or Primagaz at numerous sales outlets. If you are not sure, search via legegasfles.be to find out who the butane or propane gas bottle distributor is. No idea where the gas cylinder came from? Then you can always take it to a FeBuPro collection point

In brief:

If in doubt, look up the distributor via legegasfles.be

Or take the gas bottle to a FeBuPro collection point

Explosion hazard

Gas cylinders always contain residual gas and that means they might explode. So you should never put them in the green or blue bag!

Barbecue lighter fluid: HHW

If you have a charcoal barbecue and you use lighter fluid to light it, do not throw the empty plastic bottle in the PMD bag. Fuel packaging is never allowed in the blue bag, even when empty. Keep the bottle separate and take it to the recycling centre as household hazardous waste.
